“AL-HARAFISH” (1997-2018), LA REVISTA-OBJETO

en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Tenerife)
La revista-objeto “Al-harafish” nace en julio de 1997, en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (España). Desde entonces, ha mantenido una periodicidad irregular hasta la actualidad, con un total de 33 números, cumpliendo 20 años de existencia, en julio de 2017. Sus directores son Macarena Nieves Cáceres, José L. Luzardo y Jero Maldonado. Su título surge por azar, al abrir un libro de Antonio Escohotado y señalar con el dedo un concepto cualquiera. “Al-harafish” nos lleva al mundo de los truhanes, y en el caso que nos ocupa, a los lugares al margen del arte oficial.
La revista fue una reacción por parte de algunos artistas y poetas visuales también contra la falta de posibilidades para mostrar sus trabajos en las salas de exposiciones oficiales en Canarias. La revista se convirtió, entonces, en una espacio libre, donde un amplísimo margen de formas creativas ha ido alimentando número tras número el alma de esta publicación. Con los años, el número de colaboradores aumentó y su proyección internacional, también. Nunca se ha sostenido con ayudas públicas y ha sido autofinanciada por sus directores. Tuvo una tirada inicial de 30 ejemplares que se ha ido incrementando hasta los 40 o 50 ejemplares numerados.
Para la composición de cada número, se elige un determinado tema y, luego, se propone abiertamente. De esta manera, cada creador realiza su aportación artística: dibujo, poema, narración, acciones, escultura, música, etc. El resultado final de cada número va generando un intento cada vez más amplio de miras y más crítico con el arte y con la vida. “Al-harafish” ha contado con las aportaciones creativas de más de 300 colaboradores, muchos de ellos participan en más de un número, procedentes de España, México, Nicaragua, Holanda, Chile, Suiza, Austria, Alemania, etc. Por otra parte, las presentaciones de cada número han generado, a su vez, un motor de actividades culturales, donde se han dado cita también el arte de acción, la música, las lecturas públicas, las conferencias o los debates en diferentes espacios artísticos.
Una de las principales aportaciones de “Al-harafish” recae sobre la variedad de sus formatos: un cuadernillo, una caja de camisas, de pizzas, de puros, un contenedor de comida para llevar, una bolsa de plástico, etc. Además de ello, sus principales aportaciones paralelas han recaído en la creación de seis monográficos de artistas (1999-2001) y en una colección poética con el sello “al-harafishedita”, donde, a partir de 2004, han ido publicando obras de diversos poetas españoles.
La exposición “Al-harafish (1997-2018), la revista-objeto” tendrá lugar en la Sala Westerdahl del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Tenerife, entre el 11 de enero y el 17 de febrero de 2018. En ella, los espectadores podrán ver los contenidos de los 33 ejemplares de la revista, los monográficos y la colección de poesía, así como una pequeña muestra de creaciones en diferentes formatos de diversos colaboradores de la revista, de tanto artistas visuales como poetas.
“Al-harafish” ha constituido uno de los grandes hitos contemporáneos de nuestra historia artística y literaria. Sin duda, no se puede entender la historia del arte y la poesía visual en España, de los últimos veinte años, sin la aportación de esta revista. Algo que comenzó siendo un fanzine en papel y ha acabado siendo una revista de creación total a través de sus diversos formatos. Tanto su ejemplo de trabajo colectivo, de autofinanciación, de defensa de la libertad creativa, como los novedosos formatos que aporta y sus variados y espectaculares contenidos, convierten a “Al-harafish” en una de las revistas más fascinantes de las últimas décadas.

“AL-HARAFISH” (1997-2018), THE OBJECT-MAGAZINE
The object-magazine “Al-harafish” is born in July 1997 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Since then, it has maintained an irregular frequency up to the present, with a total of 33 issues, celebrating 20 years of existence in July 2017. Its directors are Macarena Nieves Cáceres, José L. Luzardo and Jero Maldonado. Its title emerges by chance – opening a book by Antonio Escohotado and pointing a finger at whichever concept. “Al-harafish” takes us to the world of the rascals, and in the case that concerns us, to places at the fringes of official art.
The magazine was a reaction on the part of some artists and visual poets, also against the lack of possibilities to show their works in the official exhibition halls in the Canary Islands. The magazine then turned into a free space, where a vast range of creative forms has been –number after number – feeding the soul of this publication. Over the years, the number of collaborators increased, as did its international reach. It has never been supported by public funding and has been self-financed by its directors. It had an initial circulation of 30 copies that has been increasing to 40 or 50 numbered copies.
For the composition of each number, a certain theme is chosen and then openly proposed. In this way, each creator realizes his artistic contribution: drawing, poem, narration, actions, sculpture, music, etc. The final result of each number goes on to generate each time an endeavor more broad-minded and more critical of art and life. “Al-harafish” has counted on the creative contributions of more than 300 collaborators – many of them participating in more than one number – hailing from Spain, Mexico, Nicaragua, Holland, Chile, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, etc. On the other hand, the presentations of each issue have in turn generated an engine of cultural activities, where art of action, music, public readings, lectures or debates have also met in different artistic spaces.
One of the main contributions of “Al-harafish” goes toward the variety of its formats: a booklet, a shirt box, a pizza carton, a cigar box, a take-out container, a plastic shopping bag, etc. In addition, its main parallel contributions have gone to the creation of six artist monographs (1999-2001) and a poetic collection with the seal “al-harafishedita”, in which since 2004 works of various Spanish poets have been published.
The exhibition “Al-harafish (1997-2018), the object-magazine” will take place in the Sala Westerdahl of the Círculo de Bellas Artes on Tenerife, between January 11 and February 17 of 2018. The viewers will be able to see the contents of the 33 issues of the magazine, the monographs and the poetry collection, an audiovisual presentation with various interviews and a small sample of creations in different formats by the diverse collaborators of the magazine – from both visual artists and poets.
“Al-harafish” has been one of the great contemporary landmarks of our artistic and literary history. Without a doubt, one can not understand the history of art and visual poetry of the last twenty years in Spain without the contribution of this magazine – something that began as a fanzine on paper and has ended up being a magazine of total creation through its various formats. Both its example of collective work, self-financing, defense of creative freedom, as well as the innovative formats it offers and its varied and spectacular contents, turn “Al-harafish” into one of the most fascinating magazines of recent decades.
